Generac Recalls Costco Generators

By Mike Harper · April 24, 2026

If you bought a portable generator at Costco, check the model number before you start it again.

Generac is recalling certain GP9200E portable generators sold at Costco after the company identified a carburetor defect that can cause fuel to leak — creating a fire and burn hazard for anyone operating the generator or standing nearby. The recall involves units sold through Costco locations across the United States.

The defect is in the carburetor assembly, where a flaw can allow gasoline to leak during operation. A fuel leak near a running engine — which produces heat, sparks, and in some configurations an open exhaust — creates a direct ignition risk. Generac has not publicly disclosed how many incidents, fires, or injuries have been reported in connection with the defect, but the Consumer Product Safety Commission classification of the issue as a fire and burn hazard indicates the risk is not theoretical.

Affected owners should stop using the generator immediately until the recall is resolved. Generac and Costco are expected to contact purchasers directly, and owners can also check the recall status of their specific unit by visiting the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database at cpsc.gov or Generac’s official website at generac.com.

The repair is expected to be performed at no cost to owners, though the timeline for parts availability and service scheduling has not been announced publicly.

Portable generators are among the most commonly recalled consumer products in the United States because of the combination of fuel, ignition, and exhaust involved in their operation. Generac is the largest manufacturer of residential and commercial generators in North America, and its products are found in millions of American homes — particularly in regions prone to severe weather, power outages, and hurricane seasons.

The timing of this recall is worth noting for households across the South and Southeast. Phoenix broke 15 daily temperature records in March. Hurricane season begins June 1. Homeowners who rely on backup power during outages — whether from heat events, storms, or grid failures — typically inspect and run their generators in the weeks before summer arrives. If your GP9200E has not been checked against this recall before that seasonal test run, now is the moment to do it.

The model number and date of manufacture can be found on the unit’s label. Costco purchase records can also help confirm whether a unit falls within the affected batch.
