A Child Already Swallowed the Broken Pieces. Now 227,000 Baby Toys Are Recalled.

By Erica Coleman · May 2, 2026

If you have a Stephan Baby Boo Bunnie toy in your home, take it away from your child right now and do not give it back until you complete the recall process. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall Thursday — and at least one child has already swallowed broken pieces from it.

The CPSC announced the recall of approximately 227,500 Stephan Baby Boo Bunnie and Friends children’s toys on April 30 — citing a defect in the toy’s small removable plastic cube that can crack or shatter into sharp fragments. The fragments pose two separate hazards: choking for young children who put the broken pieces in their mouths, and laceration for anyone handling them.

The recall covers all Stephan Baby-branded Boo Bunnie and Friends toys. The product is a small plush animal — sold in various animal shapes and colors — with a removable, water-filled plastic cube designed to be chilled in a freezer and then used to soothe teething pain or minor injuries in young children. The cube sits inside the plush animal and is meant to be removed and replaced.

According to the CPSC, there have been at least 20 documented reports of the cube breaking apart. In one of those incidents, a child swallowed the broken plastic pieces. No fatalities have been reported, but the CPSC classified the defect as posing a risk of “serious injury.”

The affected toys were sold across the country through major retailers — including Amazon, Walmart, and Target — as well as directly through stephanbaby.com, from August 2017 through January 2026. The price range was approximately $9 to $20. If you purchased one of these toys over the past nine years, it is included in the recall.

What to do right now:

Stop using the recalled toy’s plastic cube and remove it from your child’s reach immediately. The plush animal portion of the toy does not need to be discarded — only the plastic cube is being recalled.

To receive a refund or store credit, go to recall.stephanbaby.com. You will be asked to write the word “Recalled” in permanent marker on the indented area of the cube, then upload a photo of both the toy and the marked cube. The company will then send you a prepaid shipping return label for the cube.

The recall was issued in cooperation with Health Canada, which is also recalling approximately 1,400 units sold in Canada.
